A Conversation with Gary PisanoPart I: Science Business In this first conversation Gary Pisano, Harry E. Figgie Jr. professor of business administration at Harvard Business School and author of Science Business, defines the new science-based businesses. In the past, we had a division, where universities, nonprofit, and research institutions performed most of the science and where for-profit corporations commercialized the knowledge that came from that science. Today we see a convergence, where businesses like finance and Formula One are direct participants in both the creation of science and also in the diffusion or commercialization of scientific knowledge. Universities similarly now also become involved in commercialization of science. In these science-based businesses, like biotechnology, there is the need think differently about risk, financing, talent acquisition and culture.
