A Conversation with Gary Pisano

Part II: The Management Challenges of Science Business

(Running Time 6:55)

In this second clip, Professor Pisano explores the question of how do you manage differently in science-based businesses? Science-based businesses have fundamental inherent unknowns that challenge traditional business tools and methods. For example, because of the uncertainty of scientific outcomes, decisions about resource allocation and business planning become orders of magnitude more difficult. Professor Pisano asserts that effective managers of science-based businesses will need to use two sides of their brain: the science side that asks rational questions about data, and the manager side that can make decisions with incomplete data and ambiguity.
