Peter Schwartz: "The Art of the Long View"

An Excerpt from a Keynote Speech to the United States Naval War College and the United States Navy
(Running time: 18:28)

Peter engages his audience by arguing for the need for mental maps and scenario planning. He demonstrates his assertion that the mental map that got you to where you are is unlikely to be the one you need to navigate you in the future. He uses two corporate examples (IBM and Oil Rigging) to illustrate how scenario planning is necessary to help prepare you for large scale changes and challenges in the future. Unless you look at scenarios, he argues, "companies, governments and agencies will miss the facts- scenarios prepare the mind's eye to recognize the signals of change in a timely way."
