A Conversation with Steve Weber

Part I: The Open Source Paradigm and How it is Changing Things

(Running time: 9:18)

In this first part, Steve Weber discusses how he has studied the open source phenomenon not from a technology perspective, but "from a large scale, collective action perspective. In other words, politics." He thinks about open source as "a fundamentally different system of property rights." He asserts that the open source paradigm is not only teaching people to build software differently but also "teaching people how to build complex goods differently." It's teaching us how to collaborate more effectively- "How to work with people who are smarter than you at some things and not as smart as you at other things."
